La mode venue du Japon

Fashion from Japan

Japan thrives on traditional culture and craftsmanship, and its denim is no exception.

Authentic, this Japanese canvas has the reputation of being the best in the world. The Japan Store Isetan Mitsukoshi presents, for the first time in France, Porter Classic, a denim label inspired by ancient Sashiko embroidery.
Sashiko Boro
Tohoku Sashiko Embroidery

Porter Classic borrows its know-how from the Sashiko embroidery technique invented to strengthen fishermen's clothing to protect themselves from the cold. This traditional technique was originally intended to strengthen worn fabrics and make them warmer. Sashiko literally means "to prick/pin small". Traditionally, this technique, born in the Tohoku region of Japan, was rather made in white thread on indigo blue fabric. "At the beginning, from these clothes sometimes dating back 80 years, cleaned, treated, restored, we created unique pieces", explains Katsuyuki Yoshida, founder of Porter Classic, with his son Leo, in 2007. Each jacket is handmade and cut from an 80-year-old Sashiko fabric, carefully dusted, treated to limit its degradation, cut and finished.

Evolution

Proof that Sashiko is still trendy in 2023 and that Insoumis Clothing is listening to trends, this Noragi / Kimono created by Kenzo for its winter collection and this worker blouse embroidered by Sophie from Insoumis Clothing.
